What would a Marine tail gunner have done during WWII?
My late father-in-law was a tail gunner in the war in the Pacific and I would like to know more about what the "typical" experience of these men would have been.
Like many of these veterans, he never really talked much about his war experiences.
As a Marine tail-gunner in WWII he would have faced backward on 2- or 3-man crew aircraft operated by the airwing of the marine corps. The big bombers, B-29 & B-36, were operated by the Army Air Corps which later became the Air Force. Marines flew out of land-based airstrips as the Allied Forces hopped from island to island on the way to Tokyo.
